Both flags use an identical vertical tricolor layout of blue, yellow, and red stripes. The shades are so similar that the flags are virtually indistinguishable. This has been a source of diplomatic friction — Romania has raised the issue with the United Nations. Chad adopted its flag in 1959 when gaining independence from France, while Romania's current design dates to 1989 after removing the communist coat of arms from the center.
