The East African Community is an intergovernmental regional organization. The present Community was established in 2000 under the treaty signed in 1999 and advances integration through a customs union, common market, monetary union and the longer-term goal of political confederation.
The EAC expands the regional market, develops cross-border infrastructure, coordinates economic policy and facilitates movement to improve competitiveness and quality of life across its Partner States.

The first East African Community was established

The first Community collapsed

The current EAC Treaty entered into force and the Community was re-established
2024
Somalia completed accession, expanding the Community to eight Partner States
The EAC flag combines regional colors with the Community emblem, including the outline of Lake Victoria, an industrial gear and a handshake to represent cooperation, development and regional unity.
Usage note
The flag and emblem identify the EAC and its institutions. Public or commercial use should comply with the Community's identity rules.
