The Association of Southeast Asian Nations is an intergovernmental regional organization founded in 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Timor-Leste became its eleventh member in 2025, bringing all sovereign Southeast Asian states into ASEAN.
ASEAN promotes regional peace and stability, economic growth, social progress and cultural development through consultation, consensus and cooperation across its Political-Security, Economic and Socio-Cultural Community pillars.

Five founding members signed the Bangkok Declaration establishing ASEAN
1976
The first ASEAN Summit convened and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation was signed

The ASEAN Community was formally established

Timor-Leste became ASEAN's eleventh Member State
The ASEAN flag has a blue field with the emblem in a red circle. The yellow rice stalks represent the unity of Southeast Asian countries; blue stands for peace and stability, red for courage and dynamism, white for purity and yellow for prosperity.
