The European Union is a political and economic union rooted in the post-war process of European integration. It was formally established when the Maastricht Treaty entered into force in 1993 and has developed a single market, common policies and a system of shared institutions.
The EU promotes peace, democracy, the rule of law and human rights, supports balanced economic and social development, and enables the free movement of goods, people, services and capital through its single market.

The European flag has a circle of 12 gold stars on a blue field. The number of stars does not represent the number of Member States; twelve and the unbroken circle symbolize completeness, unity and harmony among the peoples of Europe.
