The United Nations is an intergovernmental organization founded after the Second World War. In 1945, 51 founding members signed the UN Charter; today it provides a global forum where countries discuss shared challenges, develop rules and coordinate action.
Guided by the UN Charter, the Organization works to maintain international peace and security, advance sustainable development, protect human rights, coordinate humanitarian assistance and uphold international law.

The United Nations flag places the white UN emblem on a light-blue field. The emblem shows a polar azimuthal equidistant map of the world surrounded by olive branches: the map represents the global scope of the Organization, while the olive branches symbolize peace.

The flag may be displayed to demonstrate support for the United Nations and its work. Commercial use of the UN name, initials and emblem is restricted and generally requires authorization.
